Two Members of the Board of Scientific Advisors Retire This Year

Dr. Carol Prives and Dr. Luis Parada retire from the JCC Board this year

The Jane Coffin Childs Fund would like to thank Dr. Carol Prives and Dr. Luis Parada for their years of service to the organization.

Carol Prives, the Da Costa Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Columbia University, studies the structure and function of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. She discovered that the protein is a transcriptional activator, promoting the transcription of specific genes. She also found that a specific viral protein and mutations commonly found in cancers disrupt p53 binding to DNA, setting the stage for tumor growth. Her laboratory identified novel regulators of Mdm2, the protein that holds p53 in check, and demonstrated how chemotherapy interferes with two of these regulators to benefit the patient. Prives is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and she has been called a “leading light in basic cancer research” by her peers. She served on the BSA for eight years.

Luis Parada, the Director of the Brain Tumor Center and American Cancer Society Research Professor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, is a developmental biologist who uses genetically engineered mouse models to study neurofibromatosis, brain tumors, cancer stem cells, and tumor progression. His studies have provided critical insights into brain development, associated disorders, and cancer biology, and have led to the identification of molecules that inhibit nerve regeneration after injury. Parada was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served the JCC for four years.
